Interview with Elizabeth Hurley

To kick-start March and that spring-time feeling, Elizabeth Hurley is our interview of the month. Just as you start to think of heading off to warmer climes, the successful swimwear designer shares her style tips for the beach. Plus we find out about her latest projects.

What is the best gift you have ever received?

I remember the bike I got for my sixth birthday-it was red and was called the Gemini. I adored it and used to hide all my secret things in my saddle bag. I must have ridden for miles on it.

What would be your perfect dinner party gift?

I like to be given very girlie things, like bath oil or soaps. When I’m a guest, I usually take some of our new bikinis or some swimwear for their kids.

What would be top of your Gift-Library wish list?

Oooh.....probably the VBH sparkly white and silver clutch. I have a couple of his bags and use them all the time.

As someone who is always on the move how would Gift-Library complement your life?

I love buying online-and much prefer it to actual shopping, which I can only do for about twenty minutes at a time. My own online shop at Elizabethhurley.com is a very important part of my business.

As a successful bikini designer, what are your tips for looking good on the beach?

Almost everybody has a different size top and bottom, me included, so seek out brands (like mine!) from which you can buy the top and bottom separately. It makes a massive difference.

What are your secrets to your youthful glow?

The best beauty secrets I know are to be happy, get plenty of sleep and use a good moisturizer.

As a converted country girl, what is your idea of a perfect evening?

I spend a night or so a week in London and always try to catch up with London friends. When at home, we have friends over a lot and we eat delicious food and then curl up in front of the fire with the dogs.

Do you have any exciting projects lined up for the future?

We’re opening four beach stores this Spring; in Bicester Village, Oxfordshire, and also in similar villages in Barcelona, Munich and Ireland. Also, our organic snack bars will be more widely available.

Interview with Stephen Webster

I am excited to have our February interview with Stephen Webster, someone who's jewellery I am a very big fan of. He tells us about his inspirations, upcoming projects, and what he wants from Gift-Library.

What is the best gift you have ever received?

The best gifts I have ever received have been from my wife, she is a great gift giver. Everything is thought out so far in advance. In comparison I am so pathetic I just worry about the fact that I haven't prepared.

It’s tough to pick one out of so many but at a push I would say an aluminum sculpture. She researched this a lot, it was for our 10 year wedding anniversary which is aluminum according to the old school. There are not many things to choose from in aluminum apart from a sports car and I have one of those.

What is your favourite Gift-Library item?

The Stephen Webster Superstud Hoop Earrings. They’d make the perfect gift for any style savvy females.

What would be top of your Gift-Library wish list?

I have my eye on a collector’s edition of Snowblind by Damien Hirst.

As someone who is always on the move how would Gift-Library complement your life?

I’ve flown over two million miles with BA and in any month I can be either in Tokyo, Basel, Dallas, Chicago or Moscow, Kiev, Almaty. Being able to hop onto Gift library at any time would avoid those last minute panics I’m so used to.

Do you have any exciting projects lined up for the future?

We have some really exciting ongoing brand collaborations with Grey Goose, Davidoff and two fantastic charities Malaria No More and SOS Rainforest. We’ll also be introducing additions next year to our Jewels Verne collection.

What inspired you to start designing jewellery?

At 16 I went to study fashion design at the Medway College; by chance I walked into a jewellery design class rather than the fashion design room. The flames, noise, chemicals and shiny objects were instantly appealing and much more up my alley then fashion design. I guess it was a good choice as 34 years later I am still at it!

How would you define Stephen Webster jewellery’s style?

The Stephen Webster Superstud Hoop Earrings. They’d make the perfect gift for any style savvy females. It has always been my passion to cultivate jewellery collections that push all creative boundaries; are high on innovatory and are unreservedly cool. My love of music has also really influenced my style; it has been my passion from very early days. All of my work is a reflection of my personality.  I am fortunate that selfishly, I have pursued topics and inspirations from my life’s experiences and translated them into our many collections.  Within all of them there is vibrancy.  I am a cheery fellow.

Do you have any muses? Who are they?

Christina Aguilera is our brand ambassador and I guess you could also say my muse. Christina and I have been close friends for many years and she has been a real source of inspiration for me; she has an incredible enthusiasm for my work and I love the fact that she keeps moving on style-wise. Both she and my jewellery are all about glamour so it’s easy to design collections with her in mind and on the whole we have very similar values in life.

Interview with Camilla Batmanghelidjh

I am proud to have our January interview with the inspirational Camilla Batmanghelidjh. She speaks of the importance of giving and her plans for Kids Company.

What would be top of your Gift-Library wish list for a child?

An 11 year old who had turned to Kids Company for help asked me why I couldn’t buy him some parents. The most important gift for a child is loving carers; with the gift of good attachment all traumas are survivable.

What do you love most about working with children and families?

Every day I am inspired by vulnerable children’s ability to forgive those they love even though they were abused by them. When a child had faced catastrophic pain and yet they remain hopeful I am touched by their courage, humbled by their dignity and motivated to do more for them. Equally breathtaking is the kindness of people who donate time and money to Kids Company. I get high on compassion!

What does giving mean to you?

When you give, the recipient is enriched knowing that you thought about them and took time to express your connection through a gift. Equally, as the giver of gifts, you are afforded the possibility to be creative, transforming a thought about someone into an expression to them. At the point of exchange between ‘giver’ and recipient there is a moment of mutual transformation through which both parties are enhanced. Gifting is one of the most special experiences privileged to human beings.

As someone who is always on the move how would Gift-Library complement your life?

I love giving presents; it’s like emotional champagne and Gift-Library qualifies as one of the best brands. Imagine the privilege of placing my fat bottom on a chair and then browsing virtual reality using only a finger to move the mouse in search of one luxury after another. Who would want to go shopping round crowded department stores when at a push of button you get quality that you can give away? It’s a bonus not to have to clumsily wrestle with the wrapping paper and sellotape. It’s the closest you get to magic – some fairy summoning up a treasure because you wished for it. My brand of shopping any day!

What is the best gift you have ever received?

There is a type of child who is prepared to die because they feel that life is not worth living. A lack of love, abuse and neglect has brought such bleakness onto their horizon that every day they must endeavour to fight against darkness; eventually they become too exhausted and dash their hopes. The biggest gift to me is when such a child dares to embrace life, more hopeful, anticipating joy and being able to imagine a positive future towards which they strive and build. It’s the love of another human being which heals wounded children. Their recovery is the best gift I’ve ever received.

What are your future plans for Kids Company?

Kids Company was created to battle the futility of adults who believe child abuse is too big a problem to deal with and that violent children reflecting back adult disturbances should be punished and locked in prisons. Through Kids Company we’ve been able to demonstrate that even the most disturbed child can recover having never been born a criminal or a killer. Independent evaluations demonstrate our efficacy rate to be between 80%-100% with children returning to school, college and eventually university. The recipe is to provide a substitute re-parenting experience for children whose carers can’t function. It’s so easy. There should be a Kids Company style centre in every local authority, upholding children’s rights to statutory help, advocating on behalf of children whose parents can’t meet their needs. Give the child the love they need to grow into valued and valuing citizens. That’s my dream:  the whole community brings up the child when the biological carer is struggling with their own survival.

How can people get involved with charity projects such as Kids Company?

All of us have something to give; some of us can give more than others because of our circumstances. Don’t feel guilty; give through excitement, generosity and strength. Only what you can because it will be your very best. Charities like ours need money to pay for our staff so that they can remain parental figures in children’s lives. You can either donate or organise fundraising events in your office or at home. If your children have grown up or you don’t have any children and time can be your gift you could become a mentor, offering support and an outing a couple of times a month to children who never get chances to have positive experiences. You could also give us resources. We need everything that is required in a family home from food, clothes, bed sheets, towels to kitchen, I.T, toys and art materials.  Do you have a specialist skill you could share? We could do with any kind of human help and expertise. For more information on how you can help go to www.kidsco.org.uk.

What do you think is the best gift a child could receive?

The best gift a child could receive is love that stays and doesn’t abandon you. Being cherished is what every child needs.

Interview with the Duchess of York

I am excited to have our Christmas interview with the Duchess of York. Speaking exclusively to us, she tells us what inspired her to start writing her children's books and her projects for the future.

What is the best gift you have ever received?

Aside from my two gorgeous girls! Well they gave me a beautiful box from Bespoke by Anya Hindmarch, with all these little drawers and secret hiding places and in each of the draws it has photos of them.

What would be your perfect dinner party gift?

Flowers from my garden, you can never go wrong with the personal touch, dropped around in advance so they help the hostess make the rooms look pretty, even if they are put in the lavatory!

What would be top of your Gift-Library lust list?

As I spend so much time travelling I love all the travel bits, in particular the Lisa T Blend Travel Kit. And the diamante pens!

What is your favourite Gift-Library item?

Anything from the Katharine Pooley range!

As someone who is always on the move how would Gift-Library complement your life?

I sometimes feel as if I’m never in one place for more than ten minutes! The Gift-Library is great, as someone who calls her car her office it is the perfect solution for ensuring I never forget birthdays, anniversaries or a thank you.

What inspired you to start writing your latest children’s books?

I wanted to be able help children all over the world. Little Red was born from wanting to help my little friend PJ who survived the Oklahoma bombings.

Little Red encourages children to make new friends and face their fears. I have created a magical world and a charming group of friends including Gino the dog, Roany the Pony, and Little Blue.

In this fourth adventure Little Red and her friends are enjoying a splendid autumn afternoon making their way to the Great Harvest Festival in Bluebell Wood. After kicking up a few big golden oak leaves to slide down the hill upon, they discover two lost little mice looking for their mother. Little Red is determined to help the mice find her, but she finds it difficult when her Sack of Smiles has been stolen by a naughty squirrel!

Do you have any exciting projects lined up for the future?

I have lots of exciting things coming up.... my children’s characters Little Red and Ruby are also going to be made into a series of animation films which is very exciting!

I have also produced the film Young Victoria, with Martin Scorsese, Graham King and Tim Headington, which will have its premiere in the USA next month.

The film was directed by the Canadian director Jean-Marc Vallée and stars Emily Blunt and Rupert Friend and the screenplay was written by Julian Fellowes.

Interview with Lisa T

I am proud to have this month's interview with knitwear designer Lisa T. She tells us what inspired her to start designing and what makes the perfect gift.

What is the best gift you have ever received?

The best gift I've ever received has to be my twin brother who is very close to me and has been my inspiration in all that I've done. When he left for university, he gave me a champagne colour, round shape, glass paper weight with a 3D speckled heart in the centre which has been placed and will always remain on my desk top when I design.

What is the most romantic gift you have ever received?

A handmade ring from a silversmith in Sweden from a very special person in my life.

What would be your perfect dinner party gift?

A handpicked bouquet of cut orchids or dark velvet red peonies accompanied with a bottle of Ruinart.

What would be top of your Gift-Library lust list?

I  adore the  concept of the tailor made painting "Bespoke Art" by Farah Monfaradi-Camperio  as my passion for my own Cashmere range made me produce tailored couture items. I also adore the candle from "Silver Thorn Apple" by DL and Co. for its luxury feeling.

As someone who is always on the move how would Gift-Library complement your life?

Gift-Library is a unique website that caters to my travelling needs. I am constantly travelling due to work and personal commitments and their luxury gifts are available on-line at your convenience. A necessity for those who travel but do not wish to sacrifice the luxuries in their life.

What inspired you to start Lisa T?

After a decade long tenure as a knitwear designer in England and Hong Kong with hands on experience in factories both in Hong Kong and China, I wanted to introduce another classification to Knitwear and express it through luxurious Cashmere. Lisa T allows more people to enjoy the best quality Italian cashmeres from the most prestigious Italian mills at affordable prices which is rare in the current market, hence my concept "Affordable Luxury".  I studied and was in awe of the skilled craftsmanship by Couturiers from 40's & 50's and I wanted to apply the same definition of Couture into Knitwear which I actively encourage and promote, as skilled craftsman are lacking desperately in production.

How would you define Lisa T's style?

Each individual item redefines the status quo through avant-garde knitwear that evolves manipulating organic surface designs on the body for the couture ultimate fit.

What are the biggest style influences in your life?

The Golden Age of Couture as well as all the historical & contemporary artefacts around the world.

Do you have any exciting projects lined up for the future?

Lisa T Spa will be launched at both the Four Seasons Hotel in Hong Kong and the Chiva-Som in Thailand at the end of August, followed by Lisa T Online at the beginning of September.

Doesn’t get better than that – bliss!

What are your current projects?

I have just launched my charity ‘Mothers4children’ along with Yasmin Le Bon, Trinny Woodall, Anya Hindmarch & Natalie Massenet.  Mothers4Children is the harnessing of the compassion of women to create a powerful and enduring platform for change.
